About Michaelhouse
Our Credo – QUIS ut DEUS – ‘Who but God’ drives who we are
Our Motto – Quit you like Men – drives our quest for contribution and significance
Our Values – drives what we hold to be good, at our school, in our community, for our country
Founded in 1896 Michaelhouse is ranked in the Top 100 schools globally and has been an acknowledged centre of education excellence for 125 years. Located in the KZN Midlands of South Africa Michaelhouse is home to 620 boys and is one of a few remaining all-boarding schools left in the country, and for that matter, in the world.
Within 20 kms of the school there are 16 under-resourced rural ‘no-fee’ State schools comprising 203 teachers and 6284 pupils situated in communities where unemployment and poverty are a daily reality. Consistent with the MHS core values of Integrity, Humility, Compassion, Courage and Service the Michaelhouse Community Partnership Trust (MCPT), a registered non-profit organization (NPO: 015292) has been established as an independent Outreach programme to add value to these 16 ‘Footprint’ Schools with the singular focus being to improve their functionality as places of learning and add value to the broader Midlands Community
To enhance the functionality of our 16 community schools so that every learner leaves with the self-belief of being able to realise his/her full potential
We focus on improving the functionality and optimizing the effectiveness of 16 local under-resourced community schools as places of learning, with special attention on;
- leadership development
- teacher capacity
- infrastructural dignity
- education technology
- learning outcomes.
In this regard we are guided by the National Development Plan and Global Sustainability Goals
Our Mission is to identify appropriate projects that improve the functionality and optimize the effectiveness of our 16 Footprint schools, and implement them sustainably on the basis of ‘fair exchange’.
Our belief: “Better schools, better prospects, better communities, better country”

Our Challenges
According to the Joint Education Trust there are some 30 000 schools in SA, 5% are considered World Class, 15% functional as places of learning, and 80% under-resourced and/or dysfunctional – that does not necessarily mean they are failing, but often, poorly capacitated.
Our 16 ‘footprint’ schools comprise three secondary schools; three combined schools and 10 primary schools, served by 8 independent ECD centres. 16 Principals, 203 teachers and 6284 learners make up the numbers.
Our Focus & Our Footprint
With a dedicated team of two full time staff supported by a committee of four Trustees and committed volunteers, we oversee 13 core projects which, in a sustainable manner, we hope will deliver significant improvements
