Connecting with Nature: A Journey of Learning and Appreciation

16 teachers from 16 schools supported by the Michaelhouse Community Partnership Trust recently embarked on a four-day Nature Connection Trip at Weenen Nature Reserve. Led by Peter Ardington (East ’61-’64) from the Ifa Lethu Jonny Lowe Memorial Trust (JLMT), this inspiring journey reminded everyone of the beauty, value, and fragility of our natural world – and the role we each play in protecting it. The program focused on understanding the changes in nature from the past to the present, and how our actions today will shape the future. Peter’s engaging lessons on conservation and sustainability opened participants’ eyes to the challenges our planet faces – and the practical solutions available to address them – from reducing waste and conserving water to protecting wildlife habitats. The group learned that even small actions can make a significant difference.

Beyond the classroom, the group experienced nature firsthand through game drives and guided walks across the beautiful Weenen landscape. It enabled a time for reflection, laughter, and connection. Teachers bonded over shared experiences, storytelling around the campfire, and quiet moments surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature.

Participants returned home inspired to take action, both in their schools and communities. They carried with them a renewed sense of purpose: to nurture a culture of care for our planet and to pass that message on to the next generation.

As one teacher beautifully quoted, “Take only memories, leave only footprints.”
These words by Chief Seattle capture the true spirit of the trip – to appreciate the wonders of nature, protect what we have, and ensure that future generations can experience the same beauty.
