Introduction
On June 16, South Africa pauses to honour the courageous youth of Soweto who, in 1976, stood up against an unjust education system that sought to suppress rather than uplift. The Soweto Uprising marked a turning point in the nation’s history, highlighting the power of youth voices and the importance of equitable access to quality education
Nearly 50 years later, the legacy of Youth Day challenges us to ensure that no child is left behind due to poverty, geography, or inequality and to do what we can to improve the functionality of our community schools as places of learning.
To honour this challenge, we propose the launch of a fundraising campaign to ensure that the youth in the Michaelhouse footprint have every chance of reaching their full potential. This is a call to action to support transformative education programs for the 16 under resourced partnership schools, and the eight Early Childhood Development Centres supported by the Michaelhouse Community Partnerships Trust.
Campaign Purpose and Objectives
The primary aim of the campaign is to raise funds to:
- Support the Eduhelper programme which aims to supplement staff shortages in our partner schools. (We currently have 28, we would like to add an additional 12).
- Improve Education Technology in schools by providing digital devices, equipping classrooms with connectivity and teaching aids. (Only 2 of our 6 secondary schools have adequate IT systems).
- Fund infrastructure upgrades for schools and ECD centres within our disadvantaged communities to ensure a dignified teaching environment (For 203 teachers and 6348 pupils the challenge of decent hygiene, security, classrooms and sporting facilities is constant).
- Annually support our Art, Sports and Choir competitions fostering confidence, resilience, and connectivity amongst our 16 footprint schools. (An annual event)
Impact Measurement
we will track and report on:
- Principals and Teachers benefitting.
- Number of learners reached and supported.
- Improvements in Learning Outcomes.
- Infrastructure rebuilds and repairs.
- Feedback from parents and School Governing Bodies.
We invite donors, sponsors, corporates, educators, community members and Michaelhouse Old Boys and Parents to stand with us this Youth Day. Let us turn remembrance into responsibility.
